What Car Does Golf Legend Rory McIlroy Throw his Clubs Into?

Rory McIlroy: golfer, 🏌️two-times winner of the RTA Sportsperson of the Year, car enthusiast. When McIlroy first started getting national and international recognition for his golfing, we didn’t know that soon he’d be envied both on the green and in the garage. Yet his reputation grew, and he was eventually invited to star in an episode of The Grand Tour, where he raced against  fellow car enthusiast and celebrity Paris Hilton. So, when he’s not taking the golf buggy for a spin, what does Rory McIlroy drive?

Range Rover

Following his win of the 2014 Open Championship, Rory McIlroy earned nearly £1million. So naturally, he decided to do a little celebratory spending, and two days later was spotted in an Overfinch Range Rover Sport. Well, he did deserve a little treat. The Range Rover Sport looks ideally suited to driving around some of Ireland’s rugged hills in McIlroy’s hometown of Holywood. No update on how the car is faring now McIlroy has relocated to sunny Florida!

Lamborghini

Although it’s not confirmed that this car belonged to him, McIlroy has been seen in a Lamborghini Aventador with a custom matt white paint job and 550-horsepower engine. The car may have belonged to McIlroy’s former fiancee, Caroline Wozniacki, a Danish professional tennis player. There’s no information on what McIlroy’s current wife, Erica Stoll, drives, but there are certainly plenty of cars to choose from if she needs to borrow one. Perhaps they’ll even invest in a shared Lamborghini. 

The Ferrari Collection

Just like fellow celebrity Floyd Mayweather, Rory McIlroy owns two Ferraris: a black Ferrari F430 and a Ferrari F12, which used to belong to Ian Poulter. Poulter and McIlroy are old friends, and Poulter has even joked on social media that he misses his Ferrari F12, but knows she’s in good hands with McIlroy.  Here Poulter is cleaning the car ready for the sale to McIlroy! 

BMW

As part of the promotion for their new electric range, BMW got in touch with McIlroy to see if he’d test drive the BMW i8 Hybrid whilst at the BMW championship in 2014. McIlroy certainly seemed to enjoy the opportunity, and took to Twitter to publicly thank BMW, saying “thanks for letting me use this during the week”! This marked the second time that McIlroy had trialled a BMW: in 2013, the company lent McIlroy a fully electric BMW I3.

McIlroy’s test of the BMW i8 was so successful that he ended up being given one. McIlroy’s edition came with gull wings and the brag of being the fastest electric car in the world, and joined his car collection next to the BMW M6 Gran Coupe that he’d previously bought. It’s always nice to have a matching pair!

We might need to get into this golf game...

Bugatti

The most expensive car in McIlroy’s collection - and, in fact, one of the most rare and pricey cars in the world - is the Bugatti Veyron Sports Edition. Valued at £2 million, McIlroy’s is one of only five made, and apparently it’s his ‘dream car’. This one is grey with brown leather interiors. The Bugatti Veyron family has several members, and the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport was named by the Guiness Book of World Records as the fastest super-sports car of its time. Unfortunately, we don’t know if McIlroy’s managed to find anywhere to reach those top speeds, but it’s always useful to know that your car can do that, in case you need to outrun a cheetah!

Audi

Unsurprisingly, McIlroy has kept some of his cars secret. Sometimes it’s nice to leave your £10 million mansion in a £2 million Bugatti; sometimes you want to be a little more discreet. For these occasions, McIlroy is rumoured to own an Audi RS6, which is advertised as having “brilliant everyday usability”. As McIlroy is a father now, it makes sense he would want something luxurious, beautiful, but with more than two seats and able to deal with a little bit of orange juice splashed around the inside.

There you have them! McIlroy might have a case full of trophies and more golf clubs than anyone would know what to do with, but that’s not all he’s interested in collecting. Which of McIlroy’s cars would you like the most? I think the Bugatti Veyron Sports Edition sounds the most fun, but I’d certainly take the Lamborghini Aventador for a spin.
