Small family cars are a favourite in the UK, offering the perfect balance of practicality, compactness, and comfort. The best models deliver on driving appeal, equipment, and value, all while accommodating family needs.

Here, we run through our top eight picks, with options to suit a variety of needs and budgets.

The cars featured in this guide:

  • Ford Puma

  • Dacia Duster

  • Hyundai Kona

  • Kia EV3

  • Skoda Scala

  • Citroen C3 Aircross

  • Toyota Corolla

  • Renault Captur

What makes a good small family car?

The best small family cars make life easier for every family member on board. Whether it’s parking in tight spaces, managing the school run, or going on a weekend getaway, the right car can make a world of difference.

A good small family car combines compact dimensions with generous interior space, ensuring it fits both the family and their belongings. A spacious boot is essential for carrying everything from school bags to sports gear. Running costs should also be affordable, while offering the latest tech and safety features to meet the high expectations of modern families.

Ford Puma

The Ford Puma was the UK’s best-selling new car in 2023, 2024 and 2025, so it’s hardly an original choice. It is an exceptionally good one, though, providing a brilliant blend of style, fun and practicality.

Thanks to its sporty styling and great handling, the Puma can bring a smile to any journey. Yep, even a Wednesday morning school run. That’s a real bonus in a family car, but the Puma does the sensible stuff, too. No compact SUV has a larger boot, or the Puma’s ‘Megabox’, a washable storage box under the floor that's perfect for grubby sports gear or boots. The pure-electric version (called Puma Gen-E) also adds a handy ‘frunk’ under the bonnet that’s perfect for stashing charging cables.

Dacia Duster

You might take one look at the Dacia Duster and think, ‘Hey, what’s that bulky 4x4 doing in a list of small family cars?’ Well, that’s the beauty of the Duster. It looks like it’s fit for off-road adventures, yet it’s shorter than a Ford Focus, so it’s perfectly at home on crowded city streets or in a packed supermarket car park.

And although it’s compact on the outside, the Duster is very spacious inside. Mild hybrid versions have a boot capacity of 517 litres, which is more than you get in a Nissan Qashqai. As well as over-indexing on practicality, the Duster offers remarkable value. New prices start at less than £22,000, making this chunky, family-friendly SUV cheaper than a Volkswagen Polo.

Hyundai Kona

There are lots of compact SUVs (or crossovers) out there, but the Hyundai Kona really stands out from the crowd. Not just for its sci-fi style looks (hello Robocop!), but also for its unusually roomy interior, high-tech features and choice of petrol, hybrid or pure-electric power.

The Kona’s ability to turn heads at the school gates is sure to win you brownie points, but just as importantly, it offers room to stretch out in the back and space for the entire toy cupboard contents in the boot. All versions have useful features such as a reversing camera and keyless entry, and most have heated seats (front and rear) and a heated steering wheel that make winter morning starts more comfortable.

Kia EV3

The Kia EV3 is another futuristic-looking small family car from Korea, and we think it’s one of the best small electric cars you can buy. Maximum battery range is 270 miles with the standard battery and a mighty 375 miles for the long-range version. That, in theory, is enough to drive from Exeter to Newcastle without needing to stop and recharge.

You might need to stop for a ‘comfort break’, although the EV3 is spacious enough that four tall adults have space to stretch out inside. It’s not cheap, with prices starting at more than £30,000 new, but every version is packed with features, and you get the benefit of Kia’s seven-year/100,000-mile warranty.

Skoda Scala

Skoda is known for making cars that cost less and have a larger boot than most rivals. The Skoda Scala certainly ticks those boxes, helping to make it an outstanding option if you’re looking for a cost-effective small family car.

As well as extremely competitive prices, the Scala can be a very affordable option if you’re buying via HP car finance or PCP car finance, and all of its engines are very fuel-efficient. The interior isn’t especially flashy, but it’s easy to use and feels built to withstand whatever family life throws at it.

Citroen C3 Aircross

The Citroen C3 Aircross is, in many ways, a remarkable car. First, although it’s roughly the same size and price as the other cars here, the Citroen C3 Aircross is the only one available with seven seats. Okay, space in the third row is limited, but having the flexibility to bring extra friends or family along on a trip can be a game-changer.

Second, the pure-electric version of the C3 Aircross costs just £80 more than the hybrid. Third, it’s an amazing value because it costs thousands less than most similarly-sized SUVs. And fourth, it gives a really smooth ride thanks to what Citroen calls ‘Advanced Comfort Suspension with Progressive Hydraulic Cushions’.

Toyota Corolla

Want a small family car that’s not an SUV? Then the Toyota Corolla is a great option. It might not give you a raised driving position or the sense that you could tackle tough terrain, but it offers plenty of space, low running costs and the kind of dependability that Toyota is famous for.

The hatchback model is likely to be roomy enough for many families, but if you need more rear legroom and boot space, there’s always the ‘Touring Sports’ estate version, which is a real load lugger yet still arguably qualifies as ‘small’. All versions are effortless to drive, and they should be hassle-free to own, thanks to an incredible ten-year warranty if you have the car serviced by Toyota each year.

Renault Captur

You can think of the Renault Captur as a slightly larger, more family-friendly version of the Renault Clio. Given that the Clio is one of the most practical small cars you can buy,  that can only be a good thing.

It’s the Captur’s versatility that makes it such a great family car, with a sliding rear seat that allows you to cater to different needs. Want maximum legroom to keep everyone in the back happy? Slide the seat all the way back. Want to take a load of stuff to the tip? Slide it all the way forwards and you have a huge boot.

The Captur is also well-priced, well-equipped and available with a fuel-efficient petrol engine, or as a self-charging hybrid.
